What Are Medjool Dates?

Dates have been grown and harvested by mankind for many thousands of years. There is documented evidence of dates being eaten as far back as 6000 BC. Of all the different types of dates, one stands out as the king of them all, the Medjool. This was crowned the fruit of kings, and is truly the king of fruits! Due to the size, taste and labour intensive efforts to produce. Originating from the royal orchards of ancient Arabia, it was soley eaten by kings and royalty and served to their honoured guests.

A little known fact that makes these medjool dates that much more special, is the rarity of climate that allows them to grow into such wonderful fruits. There are only a few locations in the world with the correct climate that allow these amazing date palms to grow and produce the perfect date. One of the prime locations that really brings out the best in the medjool date palm, is the special microclimate of the Dead Sea valley, in the Kingdom of Jordan.

About us

We are a family run business that concentrate on this one amazing fruit. With our Jordanian roots and heritage, it seemed only natural for us to source these heavenly fruits from farmers in Jordan who are as passionate as us about these dates. The methods for growing these dates have been used for thousands of years. They are labour intensive and each date is born of hard work, lots of sunshine, plenty of irrigated water and natural fertilisers.

What they taste like

Our medjools are a deliciously fleshy date, bursting with sweet honey, toffee and caramel like flavours. When eaten, they replenish energy and revitalize the body instantly! They are stacked full of goodness and hold many vital vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, making them a great healthy and delicious every day snack. They are high in fibre, and contain no fat or cholestrol, making them nature's 'guilt free' treat.

Picked for perfection

Each date has to be hand picked at the exact right moment as not all dates will ripen at the same time, even on the same palm. We are now working closely with local farmers in the Jordan Valley to produce these superior quality medjool dates, with the sole intention of promoting this amazing fruit here in the UK , Europe and ultimately worldwide.

Health Benefits

When it comes to the number of minerals, vitamins, and health-benefiting nutrients in dates, suffice it to say there are a lot of them. First and foremost, they’re easily digested, allowing your body to make full use of their goodness.

Dietary fiber in dates helps to move waste smoothly through your colon. The iron content determines the balance of oxygen in the blood. Potassium, an electrolyte, helps control your heart rate and blood pressure. B-vitamins contained in dates, such as the carotenes lutein and zeaxanthin, absorb into the retina to maintain optimal light-filtering functions and protect against macular degeneration. Pretty impressive stuff!

Want more? They contain vitamins A and K. Vitamin A protects the eyes, maintains healthy skin and mucus membranes, and even protects the lungs and mouth from developing cancer. Tannins, which are flavonoids as well as polyphenolic antioxidants, fight infection and inflammation and help prevent excessive bleeding (anti-hemorrhagic). Vitamin K is a blood coagulant that also helps metabolise your bones. WOW!

Copper, magnesium, manganese, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), niacin, pantothenic acid, and riboflavin are also present in dates and provide their own unique preventive and healing functions.

Together, these cofactors help your body metabolise carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Eating dates in moderation can contribute to many health benefits, such as protecting against damage to cells from free radicals, helping preventing a stroke, coronary heart disease and the development of colon, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung, and pancreatic cancers. You get the picture…

One study concluded that dates could be considered a nearly ideal food, with a wide range of essential nutrients and potential health benefits. The study reported the most prominent health benefits of dates: there are at least 15 minerals in dates, including selenium, an element believed to help prevent cancer and important in immune function, protein, containing 23 types of amino acids, some of which are not present in the most popular fruits, such as oranges, apples, and bananas. Unsaturated fatty acids include palmitoleic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids.
